Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Erie - Important Update

We can’t thank you enough for your support of Making Strides of Erie this past year and are sincerely grateful for our volunteers who helped to put the event together. With your help, we’re able to fund lifesaving research, provide patient services and offer support for patients and families affected by breast cancer.

At the end of every Making Strides season, we review all aspects of the event and look at the direction of our event moving forward. Currently, we do not have enough volunteers to fulfill important leadership positions to sufficiently support this event in Erie next year. With this in mind, a traditional Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event will not be held in Erie County in 2022.

We’re still committed to fighting cancer, and we know you are too. There are still multiple ways for you to be involved in fighting breast cancer with your American Cancer Society. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Buffalo and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Greater Pittsburgh Area events are both set to take place on October 22nd and I am happy to assist you in transitioning to those events if you would like. Also, closer to home, we invite you to join us at Relay For Life of Erie County on June 25th at Liberty Park and Highmark Amphitheater. We know fundraising to fight breast cancer is important to you so we are offering that any Making Strides of Erie team that registers for the Relay For Life of Erie County event in 2022 will have the option to continue to put all their fundraising just to the breast cancer initiatives of your American Cancer Society or be a traditional Relay For Life team that has their fundraising support the fight of all cancers, the choice is yours.

Relay For Life events are a little different in length (11am – 5pm), your team can have a tent space to gather at and you can walk as little or as much as you would like while you are there. We have a survivor celebration lap after opening ceremonies followed by a luncheon for the survivor and one caregiver to attend, right at the event. We have fun games, activities and entertainment for all ages throughout the day, including fun onsite fundraisers that teams can run from their tent if they choose. And we take time to reflect on those we are walking in memory of, those currently battling we are walking in support of, and the survivors we walk in honor of each year. It truly is a special and supportive day for the community to come together in the fight to end cancer. We would love to see you, your teams and your supporters join us.

To learn more and ask any questions you may have I invite you to reach out to me directly at [email protected] or (814) 616-2035 where I can answer your questions or set up a time for us to chat.

I hope you will join us at one of our other opportunities as we come together as a community against cancer. The fight is not complete without you.

My sincerest gratitude,
Michelle Ducharme
