Next up in our 40th anniversary spotlight: Dan Medvedev, who is our current Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2024-2026).

What is the focus of your research at the DRRC?

"I’d highlight two projects. In one, to better understand what may predict the emergence of “class consciousness,” my collaborators and I ask almost 50,000 people around the world how they view the rich and the poor. In another, we look at the extent to which people’s perceptions of changing social and moral values—things like whether people agree that abortion is justifiable or that obedience is important for children to learn—correspond to the actual changes in values that different countries have experienced."

What is one moment or project from your time at DRRC that stands out to you?

"Honestly, it’s probably the lab meetings. I’m part of a lab led by William Brady, Tessa Charlesworth, and Nour Kteily, and the discussions are always really interesting because people work on such different questions. I always feel like I come away having learned something new."

What happens when both sides can afford to make a deal—but still can't agree?

That's the challenge at the heart of The Bradshaw Foundation, a negotiation exercise by Louisa Egan Brad.

Participants enter a dispute over the future home of a world-class art collection. While a financial agreement is within reach, deeper interests are at stake: legacy, stewardship, representation, and institutional priorities.

As the negotiation unfolds, students must grapple with challenges that frequently arise in real-world negotiations:

• Managing power imbalances
• Identifying hidden interests
• Navigating questions of trust and misrepresentation
• Balancing organizational and individual goals

The exercise is particularly effective for moving students beyond "getting to yes" and toward a richer understanding of integrative negotiation and ethical decision-making.

Ideal for courses in:
• Negotiation
• Leadership
• Nonprofit Management
• Ethics

A companion webinar is also available with teaching insights and classroom guidance.
