Brrrr 🥶 it is frozen out there! Ice can be dangerous for animals, beyond just being slippery and presenting fall risks.

Many ice melts contain chemicals that can burn paw pads and cause illness if licked. Choose pet-safe ice melt whenever possible, and wipe your dog’s paws with a damp cloth after walks to remove salt and debris.

Dog boots can also help protect paws from sharp ice, cold temperatures, and chemical irritation, especially for dogs who are sensitive or walk frequently on treated sidewalks. Not every dog will tolerate these, but you can start slowly and get them used to boots at a young age to help!

In addition, frozen ponds, lakes, and puddles can look solid but may not support an animal’s weight. Each winter, pets and wildlife are seriously injured after falling through thin ice. For everyone’s safety, keep dogs leashed near icy water and never allow them to walk onto frozen surfaces.
