Nick Bollettieri died this past Sunday (Dec. 4) at age 91. If you don’t know about Nick, I encourage you to read Joel Drucker’s column here: https://bit.ly/3hdg4js
There is much to marvel over Nick—his energy, enthusiasm, innovation, work ethic, accomplishments, accolades…and the list goes on.
But one quality that always comes to my mind is his generosity. I was just one of the many beneficiaries of Nick’s big-heartedness when he offered me a scholarship to train at his tennis academy in Bradenton, FL. I went there when I was 15 years old, halfway through my sophomore year of high school.
My family and others in Minnesota had laid the groundwork but the remainder of high school training at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy was responsible for my developing into a professional player. Yes, it was all the court time in the sun and the competition with the other aspiring juniors and pros. But it was especially the irrepressible force who fueled the place, squatting down behind you on court willing you to the next level.
So much more could be said but just one more thing about Nick’s family. I know his three older children—Jimmy, Danielle Bollettieri, and Angel. To see their love and care for their dad to the very end says a whole lot about them and what they thought of their father.
I miss Nick, will always be grateful to him, and will never forget the many memorable times with him over the years.
Finally, death is a sobering reminder of what’s inevitable for all of us. Jesus made a promise to a woman named Martha whose brother Lazarus had recently died (Jesus was about to miraculously raise him from the dead). Before doing so, Jesus said to Martha:
“I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.” John 11:25-27
According to Jesus, physical death is but the entrance to eternal life with Him for “everyone” who believes in Him.
To quote Jesus: “Do you believe this?”
