Today my heart beats like a drum for the Diné warriors we call the Navajo Code Talkers.
On this day, we lift their names high into the four directions, for they carried a gift so powerful that it turned the tide of a world at war — their own sacred language, Diné bizaad.

Think of it: a language the boarding schools tried to beat out of them, a language that governments once said was not fit for the future, became the very shield and sword of victory. In the Pacific’s fiercest battles — Iwo Jima, Saipan, Guam, Tinian — their words moved faster than bullets, and not once did the enemy break their code. Over 800 messages in a single battle, sent without error. That, my relatives, is not just skill — it is spirit moving through breath.

And yet, when the guns grew silent, they were told to stay silent too. Their deeds were locked away, their heroism hidden in the shadows of secrecy until 1968. They came home not to parades, but to the same walls of discrimination they had always known. They defended a country that would not yet let them vote. But still, they stood proud. Still, they carried themselves as warriors.

Today, only two remain — Thomas Begay, 100 winters old, and Peter MacDonald, 96 winters — the last living flames of that great fire. They remind us that a warrior’s power is not only in battle, but in keeping truth alive when others would forget it.

To the young ones hearing this: remember the lesson of the Code Talkers. Your language, your culture, your identity — these are not relics; they are weapons of survival, shields of strength, medicines for the generations yet to come. Never believe the lie that you must leave them behind to walk into the future. The future itself may one day depend on them.

So we honor them — not just with parades or medals, but by speaking our languages, by keeping our songs, by defending our ways.
Because the greatest code they ever carried was not just for the Marines — it was for all of us: Our identity is our power.

Mitakuye Oyasin. We are all related. The Diné Code Talkers have shown us that when we carry our ancestors’ words, we carry victory itself.
