Abscesses! Thrush!
With the wet weather that is here let’s work to prevent these common problems.

1. Farrier!
Correct hoof trimming, regular cycle and balanced trimming is key.
2. Pick out feet regularly!
Avoid mud balling up in the foot that could cause sole pressure and pain, and remove manure and debris that will exacerbate decay and allow bacteria and fungi to thrive.
3. Stall hygiene!
Keep the feet dry. Don’t let your horse stand in urine soaked bedding. Treat your horse for underlying metabolic conditions such as Cushings/PPID that cause excessive urination or rotate stalls to keep them dry. Clean manure daily and add sand to stalls as needed.
4. Treat underlying lameness!
A lame horse may grow out an abnormal foot or prefer to stand on “soft” footing such as urine or manure; watch for your horse standing in holes they dig.
5. Treat wet feet!
Be preventative! Use a mild astringent after picking feet during wet weather such as iodine/betadine/copper/or a chlorine based product.
6. Avoid caustic agents!
The foot is alive. We don’t want to kill the foot, just dry it out and treat the disease. Biotin and regular exercise for circulation are great! Avoid bleach and glue. Wrap only in breathable materials (cotton and no plastic such as vetrap in direct contact with hoof).
