2022 Project Update!

Our student-led iGEM team is working to develop natural dyes for textiles using engineered proteins produced in bacteria. Many bacteria already produce natural pigments in a wide variety of colors. Our goal this season is to optimize the structure and binding capabilities of these pigments for use as an alternative to traditional synthetic textile dyes, such as azo dyes. These synthetic dyes are much more labor-intensive to produce and can have very harsh byproducts. Some azo dyes are even considered carcinogens by the European Union. Our dyes will be made from naturally occurring pigments fused to binding modules to enhance their binding capabilities to organic textiles such as cotton. Our team-based research will be performed over the summer semester, with the project culminating in a final presentation in Paris, France this October.
