Dogs are olfactory animals. Sniffing is mental exercise, stress relief, and confidence building
A dog’s nose is their primary sensory system.
Sniffing activates huge portions of the brain — far more than visual stimulation.
Think of it like:
• 📖 Reading the news
• 📱 Scrolling social media
• 🧩 Solving a puzzle
This is why The K9 Collective LOVES the scatter marker.
A scatter marker is when you toss multiple small pieces of food onto the ground and cue the dog to “Find it.”
It immediately shifts the dog’s brain from:
⚡ Visual trigger fixation
→
👃 Olfactory search behavior
That shift is everything.
When you scatter food:
• The nose drops.
• Heart rate lowers.
• Cortisol decreases.
• The brain shifts into hunt/forage mode.
Hunt drive is focused. It’s purposeful. It’s controlled.
Prey reactivity is explosive. It’s visual. It’s impulsive.
You’re redirecting the type of drive — not suppressing drive entirely.
That’s a massive difference.
Friday the 13th… and the scariest thing in your house is your dog in the kitchen. 😅
If you can’t cook without a shadow,
if “off” is optional,
and if your counters aren’t safe…
It’s not bad luck. It’s missing structure.
The good news?
Chaos → calm is absolutely possible.
At The K9 Collective, we teach dogs how to relax on Place so you can actually make dinner in peace.
No horror movie soundtrack required. 😉

Monday night private lesson dog Sheldon! Sheldon has some big feelings and we’ve spent months laying solid foundations to show him how to process those feelings. Next step is asking more neutrality and teaching ecollar communication so we have a solid, non directional, way to help him process choices in a safe manner!
