🐾 Bringing Home a Rescue Dog? Let’s Talk About the 3-3-3 Rule! 🐾

We know how exciting and emotional it can be to welcome a rescue dog into your home. For some pups, the transition from shelter life is smooth sailing. For others, it can be a confusing and scary time. That’s why we love sharing the 3-3-3 Rule — a simple guideline to help adopters understand what their new furry friend might be going through during those crucial first days, weeks, and months.

✨ Here’s what to expect when you adopt a rescue pup:

💛 3 Days:
Your new dog may feel overwhelmed, unsure, or even scared. They might not eat, drink, or engage much. They could hide or seem withdrawn. This is 100% normal. Give them space, patience, and love — they’re decompressing.

💛 3 Weeks:
You’ll start to see your dog relax and feel more at home. They’re learning your routine, getting to know you, and starting to build trust. You may also see some behavioral quirks pop up — this is when guidance, training, and structure are key!

💛 3 Months:
Your pup now knows they’re home. Their personality is shining, they’ve bonded with you, and they’ve accepted your home as their own. They’re officially part of your pack 🐶❤️

⏳ Transition takes time, and every dog is different. Many shelter animals come from unknown or difficult pasts — so be gentle, be consistent, and most of all, be patient. You’re giving them a second chance at life, and the love they’ll give you in return? Priceless.

Hello folks! I don't know why this page let's me in some times & not others but figured I'd check in since I can today.

OHCAAT is now just me, Amy Sornson. My wonderful former foster homes retired &/or moved away. I was unable to find anybody willing to commit and I can't carry the load I once did.

That said, I will always help small companion animal as I can. Just know I have very limited space & funding. As part of the San Juan Animal League's TNR crew, I'm mostly fostering kittens that are too small for surgery when we trap their colony.
