When you work with rescued animals it's not uncommon to have animals that are terrified of humans. Hands sometimes have done terrible things to them and a hand coming towards them is terrifying.

Our Socialization Team works with many frightened or defensive animals and reaching out to them in a way that will work for them means understanding their personality and being creative.

Morticia came to us truly terrified of hands. We came to know that she has a very gentle soul. We don't just recommend sticking your face into just any animal's face, but rabbits do communicate face to face so if the right temperament is there, we can do the same.

Because Morticia was still too frightened to approach her and get close to her face to face, our Socialization Team Supervisor took to using a treat in her mouth to lure Morticia to her. Starting with just waiting at the open door to Morticia's house, her patience paid off. Sure enough, it worked. After Morticia learned she was safe getting a treat this way from one person, she learned that others would not reach out to touch her with their hands, but would give her a treat the same way so she learned to approach others even when she was loose for exercising. Gradually, she is learning to relax and know that she won't be harmed.

Here she is enjoying getting a treat from two other volunteers on our Socialization Team and then totally sprawling and relaxing.

Morticia has recently been shaved for her spay and we are working on the possibility of a dewlap reduction for her. Female rabbits, when not spayed, can develop enormous dewlaps as they age to the point where they can hinder comfort. At MO HRR we do whatever we can to help the rabbits in our care be happy and healthy.
