Hair has always carried deep spiritual and cultural meaning for many cultures, including Indigenous peoples across North America. For some Native communities, long hair symbolized strength, identity, wisdom, and connection to ancestors and nature.

Historical accounts and oral traditions show that some Indigenous people wore their hair naturally matted, braided, or locked depending on tribe, region, lifestyle, and spiritual practices. Hair was often viewed as an extension of the spirit, not simply a fashion statement.

Colonization deeply impacted Indigenous hair traditions. Native children forced into boarding schools often had their hair cut against their will, something many tribes viewed as traumatic and disrespectful to their identity and culture.

Today, natural hair journeys, including locs, can represent pride, resilience, spirituality, and reconnection to ancestral roots for people across many cultures.

As I took on this career, I came to honor the history, meaning, and artistry behind locs and natural hair care with respect and education. 🀎πŸͺΆπŸ™πŸΌ
