Delivering babies, shaped by fatherhood -

Dr. Micah Mathai, medical director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at IU Health Fishers and associate physician leader for the IU Health Metro Region, was initially drawn to his specialty for the variety it offered. Today, as a father of two, his connection to the work has taken on even deeper meaning.

“It’s the ability to go into the office and see new patients and patients I’ve seen for years, caring for them during their prenatal care, annual visits in gynecology or screenings for cervical cancer. Then, I may have to go to the Emergency department for an emergency surgery. I also have my scheduled surgical cases, using advanced technology. Then, I may go up to Labor and Delivery to help a patient of mine deliver,” he explains. “I think that really spoke to me, and it just became something I was very interested in.”

Dr. Mathai joined IU Health in 2023 and moved to IU Health Fishers full time when the hospital opened its new Maternity unit in October 2025.

“The most rewarding part of my job to this day is delivering babies. Women do a lot and carry a lot of the burden, so being able to assist and help them bring life into the world is phenomenal,” he says.

As a father to a 5–year-old daughter and 1-year-old son, Dr. Mathai feels an even stronger connection to his patients and their experiences.

“They’re my heart and my love. They’re the spitting image of me and my wife,” he says. “One of the most rewarding parts of being a father has been watching them grow. I blinked, and now all of a sudden, they’re running around and talking up a storm.”

Experiencing childbirth as a husband and father, rather than as a physician, has brought a new perspective to his care.

“I think being a father has definitely affected the way I treat my patients,” he says. “It has its perks. Several first-time fathers have come to me with questions. It’s been rewarding being able to talk to them, counsel them, give advice.”

He also sees that same level of commitment and compassion across his team.

“We are all devoted and committed to providing the best care possible,” he says.

This Father’s Day, Dr. Mathai is spending time in Michigan with his family to celebrate his wife’s birthday.

“We’re just going to celebrate by the beach and enjoy family time together.”

Please help us wish Dr. Mathai and all fathers a very Happy Father’s Day in the comments.
