Olympic Weightlifting

Every deadlifting grandmother owes every pound she pulls to nine brave nursing home residents who started lifting weights in 1988 — in the first-ever study of high-intensity strength training in nonagenarians.

That study, published in the JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION in 1990, documented the transformative effects of a simple exercise program: three sets of eight reps of the single-leg knee extension—at 80% of each individual’s one-repetition maximum—three times per week. After eight weeks of training, the average strength gain was 174%. Average increase in walking speed (tandem gait) was 48%. Two of the subjects no longer needed to use canes to walk at the end of the study. Bottom line: This was the first scientific proof that strength training is safe, feasible and effective, even for the oldest, frailest people.

At a time when most doctors still believed it impossible for people in late middle age to build significant amounts of strength and muscle — and thought heavy lifting entailed mortal risk of cardiac events for older people — the pilot study of high-intensity lifting at Boston’s Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged sparked a paradigm shift in the science of strength and aging.

STRONGER: THE UNTOLD STORY OF MUSCLE IN OUR LIVES tells the tale of this pioneering study by the M.D. geriatrician Maria Fiatarone Singh. Then the book follows her investigations of strength training as medicine to prevent or treat depression, type 2 diabetes, dementia, hip fracture, falls, osteoarthritis, and many other diseases and disabilities.

If strength training were a pill, it would be as celebrated as penicillin – and Maria Fiatarone Singh would be a household name.

I often talk about leaning on your support network & how much they can not only optimize performance, but enhance your everyday life. Today, I’d like to highlight In Motion Chiropractic and Rehabilitation in Oviedo, FL. In NY, I was very fortunate to have worked with Brown Chiropractic Associates. If you’re anywhere near Wappingers Falls, look up Dr. Brown.

After I moved to Florida, I searched diligently to find someone that would be a good fit for me. I hit the jackpot. Dr. Torina is very knowledgeable & skilled. His work with UCF athletes was one of the things that attracted me to his practice. His additional staff is the icing on the cake, offering PT, Massage work & Physio work.

If you’re in the area, I highly recommend taking advantage of their services.
