Multiple cases of canine parvovirus have been confirmed in the Florence area this week, according to the Oregon Coast Humane Society.

Parvovirus, commonly known as parvo, is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. The organization reported that a female dog and her five puppies recently died after contracting the virus.

Early detection can greatly improve a dog’s chances of survival. Pet owners should watch for signs including extreme lethargy, loss of appetite, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, bloody stools, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration may include sunken eyes, dry gums, and poor skin elasticity.

Anyone who suspects their dog may have parvo should contact a veterinarian immediately. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect dogs from the disease. 🐾
