On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free when Union troops arrived and announced the end of slavery. This historic day became known as Juneteenth—a celebration of freedom, resilience, and hope.
Today, we honor the strength, perseverance, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. Juneteenth is more than a commemoration of the past; it is a reminder that freedom, justice, and equality are ideals worth pursuing for every generation.
As we celebrate, let us remember those who endured unimaginable hardships, recognize the progress that has been made, and commit ourselves to building communities rooted in understanding, dignity, and unity.
