Great job by Mayor Kathy Smith to lead adoption of the first official flag for the City of Flowood. Congrats to Northwest High School student Rodgers Brown for inspiring the flag design.

The CMPDD Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has approved more than $34.1 million in federal grant funding for 22 transportation improvement projects across the Jackson metro area.

Combined with local matching funds, these projects represent more than $49 million in transportation investments focused on roadway improvements, congestion relief, safety enhancements, and multimodal transportation options throughout Hinds, Madison, and Rankin Counties.

I know it’s almost a sport to hate on your own city and state, but Dogwood and Lakeland Drive continue to attract growth and real capital. Expectations are much higher in 2026 than they were in 2006. That’s great and a part of the city’s success, but the conversation should be grounded in facts.

A few quick points:

• The former KFC is being torn down for a new use that doesn’t involve fried chicken. Imagine that!
• A new restaurant is expected soon in the former Panera space, and several others have already opened in the area.
• Barnes & Noble took the Bed Bath & Beyond location immediately. See also the new Boot Barn.
• Community Bank invested millions in a beautiful new headquarters that also houses a regional law firm and other corporate users, meaning high paying jobs rooted in the area.
• Ergon has made a major investment and expansion just down the road from Dogwood, creating more high paying jobs.
• Medical offices and other professional uses continue to add daytime population and good wages.
• According to third-party data, Dogwood had more visitors during the 2025 Christmas shopping season than in 2024.

Supporting Dogwood as much as possible as retail changes is one of the most important things we can do as a City, even knowing some changes will be outside our control.

I understand the frustration about the former Stein Mart and Back Yard Burgers spaces, but much of that is because the respective owners are holding out for the right tenant rather than accepting just anything. I see that as a feature, not a bug. Stein Mart has been close to leased on multiple occasions. The right deal simply hasn’t crossed the finish line yet.

It’s easy to criticize an area from behind a keyboard. But investors, banks, and businesses, folks with real money at risk, continue to bet on Dogwood and on Flowood’s future. The contrast is clear: capital is choosing this area even while online commentary often assumes the worst.

Some concerns are fair, but the most productive thing we can do is support what is here and push constructively for what comes next.

Flowood's economic development director, Daniel Lang, provides some helpful information here about upcoming events and development. From the Paddle House to the Lot at Liberty to filling commercial retail spaces, Daniel and the city are working hard for Flowood. Great job, Daniel!

This is a great reminder of Flowood’s important role in our region and state’s healthcare network. Flowood is home to outstanding medical facilities that serve families and strengthen our economy alongside our thriving retail and industrial sectors.
