To The Roots Coffee Roasters

We forgot to mention our 30th anniversary last year! It must have been because we were busy brewing this little bean, the third generation addition to BJ’s Coffee Co. This is Aili Jo (eye-Lee) or AJ for short! Chances are pretty good you’ve seen her or will see her smiling face at the coffee shop on any given day. She loves meeting and seeing everybody so don’t be shy to say hello and give her a big smile when you see her, she loves to smile back!

Know Your Roaster: Born in Hawaii and raised in Oregon since he was four, our roaster, Nathan Palmer has always felt more at home in the water than anywhere else. He has loved fishing and diving since he was little. He has fished countless waters all over the globe in Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii, British Columbia, Costa Rica, the Keys, Turks and Caicos, Belize, and Mexico.

How many pounds of green coffee do you think is in this mound? The average coffee tree produces an annual yield of 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of roasted coffee. It takes about 4,000 hand-picked green coffee beans to make a pound of coffee!

Quality coffees must be picked by hand, a process that takes three to four visits per tree each year. This is because coffee cherries do not ripen at the same time. A branch of a tree might simultaneously bear blossoms, green fruit, and ripe cherries. A good picker can pick about 200 pounds of coffee cherries in one day, equaling about 50 pounds of green coffee beans or 39 pounds of roasted coffee! We can’t express enough how much respect we have for all of the coffee farmers, pickers and processors, and we have so much gratitude for the amount of work that goes into our cup of coffee before it even makes it to our roaster.
