The Douglas squirrel is one of Oregon’s four native tree squirrels. One of it’s primary food sources is the cones of the Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). I am always blown away by just how prolific at devouring cones these creatures can be, as evidenced by this pile of cone parts!

Side note: this was found at Chehalem Ridge Nature Park. If you haven’t had the chance to visit, you are in for a treat. Many acres of forest has been set aside now for recreation and preservation in one of the most beautiful spots in the county. There are many miles of excellent trails and as the years go on, the young forests will age gracefully, inching ever closer to the distinction of “old growth”. Metro

I encountered some beautiful dwarf conifer specimens at a client’s place today. I’m unsure of all of the specific cultivars, but there were several incredibly vibrant Pinus contorta ‘Chief Joseph’, and some Abies koreana and Chamaecyparis obtusa. Made my day!

Dwarf conifers are propagated by taking cuttings from genetically anomalous specimens and grafting them onto compatible rootstock. Basically, you find a mutation…and exploit it. Fascinating! -Justin Marble
