hi all 👋🏼, laura here! it’s been about 12 years (where has the time gone?!😱) since we started designing our own home. i’m often asked if there are things I would change with the design, but I really haven’t gotten tired of the design choices we made, and it got me thinking… what makes design timeless?? 🤔

1. it starts with paying homage to the bones of the architecture or creating a definitive architectural style if your house doesn’t have one. in this case, we highlighted the 17ft moss rock wall by keeping things clean and neutral around it. we also highlighted the natural daylight by painting everything white including the vaulted ceiling so the heavier rock was balanced with a light airiness. we also infused period pieces of 1960s furniture, along with a mix of others, so the furniture feels authentic to the time. being true to the bones creates a classic timelessness that ages well.

2. we took risks at the time— like a massive hood and island vs wall cooking (somehow this felt controversial at the time 🤷🏼‍♀️) and a mix of art that was not typical family subject matter (aka drawings of naked ppl and graffiti). 🤣

3. infuse your personality. putting things in your home through the filter of what you’re obsessed with will grow w/you and make you happy over time vs. focusing on what others think or what’s trending at the time.

i’m curious—what are risks you took with your home that made you feel closer to your true self / best state? it can be the littlest things that lead to a better life. 😄
