On the occasion of , we want to recognize one of our own - Ivis Carrera Valdes, a CSUHN Mental health counselor and share her story.
Ivis Carrera Valdes, a native of Cuba, embarked on a transformative journey to the United States at the age of 23. Her family's decision to immigrate to the USA necessitated her acquisition of English as a second language, a pursuit she diligently undertook. She subsequently earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida and engaged in community service. Furthering her education, she attained a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of West Florida. Her exceptional dedication led her to secure a Post-Masters Fellowship at CSU Health Network.
Upon her arrival in the United States, Ivis's acculturation process brought awareness of her own identity, shaped by the way others treated and perceived her. She draws immense pride from her Latinx heritage, cherishing values such as service, community, humor, a love for music, dance, and culinary delights. However, she acknowledges the challenges associated with her identity, including scrutiny due to her accent, unwarranted questioning of her knowledge and abilities, and the persistence of microaggressions and occasional discrimination.
In offering guidance to fellow professionals in her field, Ivis stresses the significance of extensive personal introspection into one's identities and values. She underscores the importance of strengthening and clarifying these aspects to bolster resilience in the face of challenges. She encourages individuals to draw strength and motivation from their values, emphasizing the need to persevere while recognizing their own humanity.
