Scripture - Matthew 13:28b

The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’

Prayer Focus: When we perceive that there is an enemy in our midst, our first inclination is to root it out. Let’s make ourselves pure and holy again. Those who are a threat must be eliminated. We want to do something immediately! The slaves ask if they should go and gather the weeds. Pray about your reaction today. Are you really called to act to root out the evil? What is the risk? Are you really the slaves of the householder in this parable? Maybe you are the wheat growing next to the weeds? What would be your response in that case? Pray for how you might respond to this vision of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Scripture - Matthew 13:27-28a

27 And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ 28 He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’

Prayer Focus: The slaves of the householder want to know where the weeds came from? Did the householder intentionally put them there? These are big theological questions, like how could there be evil in a world created and sustained by a good God? The householder answers that an enemy, someone working against the plans and purposes of God, has sown the weeds in the field. Jesus never denies that there are forces working against him during his ministry. He is not unaware of the complexities of life. Pray that you might recognize when there are things drawing you away from Christ. Pray that your eyes might be open to the world.
