About the 809 Foundation

In the early morning hours of January 16, a horrific act occurred in York County, South Carolina. Four law enforcement officers were shot following a response to a domestic violence disturbance. One of those officers never made it home. Detective Mike Doty was a member of the York County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. He, along with his fellow officers, went into the night to protect a family – a community.

Tragically, he sustained a fatal injury and succumbed to his wounds on January 17, 2018.

In the wake of Mike Doty’s untimely death, the 809 Foundation was formed. Our mission is to provide assistance in: substance abuse prevention and treatment; youth mentoring; and community unity – including supporting law enforcement.

Why 809? Officers are typically assigned numbers to identify them on the radio. Det. Mike Doty was call number 809. Law enforcement codes are also often used to expedite communication – in some areas of law enforcement 809 refers to a missing person.
