This is why we do what we do. Watch this video about a very brave teenager and her experience growing up with dyslexia.

📚 Reading Myth vs. Reality
❌ MYTH: If a child just reads more books, their reading difficulties will disappear.
✅ REALITY: Practice is important, but practice alone doesn’t teach a child skills they don’t have.
Imagine asking someone to practice basketball every day without ever teaching them how to dribble, pass, or shoot. They might improve a little, but progress would be slow and frustrating.
Reading works the same way.
If a child is struggling with:
🔹 Phonological awareness
🔹 Decoding
🔹 Fluency
🔹 Spelling
🔹 Comprehension
They need explicit instruction in those skills—not just more time spent reading.
This doesn’t mean reading at home isn’t valuable. It absolutely is!
But when a child is struggling, the question becomes:
👉 Do they need more practice, or do they need more instruction?
That distinction can make all the difference.
💬 What reading advice did you hear growing up that you now realize wasn’t completely true?
Have you ever wondered how your child can be so bright, so creative, and so knowledgeable, yet still struggle with reading and spelling?
That may be what is sometimes called stealth dyslexia.
Children with stealth dyslexia often find ways to compensate for their reading difficulties. They may use context clues, memorize words, or rely on their strong language skills to get by. Because of this, their struggles can be easy to miss.
You might notice that your child:
📚 Understands much more than they can read independently
🗣️ Has a strong vocabulary and can talk in detail about topics they love
💡 Is curious, creative, and intelligent
✏️ Continues to struggle with spelling, decoding, or written work
One common clue is when a child’s ability to talk about a topic is much stronger than their ability to read or write about it.
Many parents tell me, “I know my child is smart, but reading just seems so much harder for them than it should be.”
Dyslexia is not a sign of low intelligence. In fact, many students with dyslexia are incredibly bright. The key is identifying the underlying reading difficulty and providing the right instruction so they can build the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
If your child is working hard but reading and spelling still don’t seem to match their abilities, it may be worth taking a closer look.

When a person is diagnosed with dyslexia, it can be a profoundly clarifying experience, as it identifies a specific cause for their literacy challenges.

📚 Things Parents Think Are Dyslexia… That Sometimes Aren’t
As a reading specialist, one of the most common questions I hear is:
“My child is struggling with reading. Does that mean they have dyslexia?”
Sometimes the answer is yes. But sometimes the answer is no.
Here are a few things that can look like dyslexia but may have a different cause:
🔹 Limited reading instruction or missed foundational skills
🔹 Attention or executive functioning challenges that make reading and writing difficult
🔹 Speech and language difficulties
🔹 Hearing or vision concerns
🔹 Lack of reading practice
🔹 Gaps in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, or comprehension that have never been identified
The truth is that struggling with reading tells us there is a problem, but it doesn’t tell us WHY.
That’s why assessment matters.
Before creating a plan, I want to understand:
✔ What skills are strong
✔ What skills need support
✔ Whether the difficulty is consistent with dyslexia
✔ What type of instruction will be most effective
Every struggling reader deserves answers—not guesses.
💬 Have you ever wondered whether your child’s reading challenges were caused by dyslexia or something else?
Choosing homeschool curriculum can feel overwhelming.
With so many reading, math, and intervention programs available, it can be difficult to know which resources are evidence-based, which are a good fit for your child, and which are worth the investment.
Recently, I’ve been reviewing Reading Reflex, a parent-friendly resource designed to help families understand how reading and spelling work. As a reading specialist, I’m always looking for materials that are both evidence-based and practical for parents to use at home.
Through homeschool consulting, I help families:
📚 Select reading and math curriculum
📚 Review assessment data and identify learning gaps
📚 Create learning plans based on student strengths and needs
📚 Choose intervention programs and resources
📚 Understand reading development and the Science of Reading
📚 Plan for scholarship funding options, including ESTF and ESA+
Sometimes families don’t need ongoing tutoring—they need a roadmap and confidence that they’re moving in the right direction.
If you’re homeschooling and feeling overwhelmed by curriculum choices, I’d be happy to help.
One of my favorite parts of homeschool consulting is helping families sort through the endless number of curriculum and intervention options available today.

One challenge many homeschooling families face is knowing which programs are worth their time and money. What works well for one child may not be the best fit for another.

One of my favorite parts of tutoring is getting to celebrate student success long after the hard work begins.
This week I learned that one of my students earned A/B Honor Roll for the entire school year, and another qualified for the Gifted and Talented program!
What makes these moments especially meaningful is that both students started with reading challenges. Through the Launch process, we were able to identify their strengths, pinpoint areas for growth, and create individualized learning plans based on their specific needs.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning. When we take the time to understand how a student learns and provide targeted instruction, amazing things can happen.
I am so proud of these students and grateful to be a small part of their journey. These are the moments that make my tutor heart happy. ❤️
