Post-op and already feeling free 🙌🏼

This patient came to us immobilized past the wrist in a heavy, sweaty surgical dressing for a P2 finger fracture and left with this custom hand-based orthosis made with Orfilight 1/16” Black NS by

The difference was night and day.

Why Orfilight is our go-to for post-surgical hand and finger splinting:

Up to 30% lighter than similar materials, you immediately feel the difference

Micro-perforated for airflow and temperature regulation; a must living in Southwest Florida 🌴

Soft, foamy feel against the skin, minimizing irritation

Matte black finish resists fingerprints; easier to look pretty (which translates into patient compliance)

Non-stick coating means it won’t adhere to bandages or stockinette

Memory; making it remoldable as swelling changes

Custom orthotic fabrication is both one of the most underappreciated and underdeveloped skills in hand therapy. This hand splint is well molded to his anatomy, leaving neighboring fingers free to move and function while stabilizing and protecting exactly what needs protecting.

He left smiling. That’s the whole point of why we show up day after day 🙌🏼

This patient had a long-standing hand contracture with her fingers curled into her palm for years. She had tried multiple prefab and custom splints over that time, none comfortable enough to wear consistently.

Following recent surgery, we had a real opportunity to work on reducing the contracture and improving finger extension. Realistic expectations were important here; we knew a full correction wasn’t a practical goal.

What mattered most was finding something she would actually use. After hearing her history with splints, we decided to try something different. We took an exercise cone and converted it into a night splint. Padded, comfortable, and sized to gently position her fingers into some extension, not allowing flexion to the palm.

It’s the first splint she has ever been able to wear through the night! That’s a win!

Sometimes the best intervention isn’t the textbook one. Listening to your patient’s experience and being willing to adapt is half the work.
