Every Fourth of July, we gather to celebrate the freedoms that define our nation. We enjoy backyard BBQs, fireworks, and time spent with family and friends. It's a beautiful reminder of the sacrifices made so we can live with liberty and opportunity and for that we are extremely grateful!

However, Independence Day also offers a chance to reflect on another kind of freedom—our personal independence.

The choices we make each day have such a powerful impact on our future. Choosing nourishing foods, moving our bodies, prioritizing sleep, managing stress, and staying connected with our tribe all help us protect something incredibly valuable: the ability to live life on our own terms. Good health isn't about perfection; it's about creating the strength and energy to enjoy the moments that matter most.

And while we can't control everything that comes our way, we can take small, meaningful steps that support our well-being. Every healthy choice is an investment in maintaining our independence for years to come.

Just as important is the hope we carry with us. No matter where you are on your health journey, it's never too late to begin making positive changes. Each new day is an opportunity to start fresh, one choice at a time.

As Scripture reminds us, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1

This Independence Day, as we celebrate the freedom of our nation, let's also celebrate the gift of caring for the bodies we've been given—embracing the freedom to live fully, serve others, and enjoy the blessings each new day brings.

Do the shoes I wear really impact the rest of my body?
In short, absolutely. This is something that we talk about ALL the time in our office. Everything in our body is connected and when we neglect certain areas, problems arise elsewhere as well. Cue Hauser’s Law #1 – if the etiology of chronic pain or joint degeneration remains elusive, it can be traced back to ligamentous joint instability.

Our feet are like the “tires of our body” and if they are weak or misaligned, the damage travels upward, i.e knee pain, hip pain, low back pain… you get the picture. By taking care of our “tires,” we are enhancing our longevity and fall prevention!

What shoes should I stay away from?
Less is more in this situation – A shoe should “do less to your foot to be best for your foot! When picking a new shoe, whether for athletics or leisure wear it should not taper or be more narrow at the toe. The toe is the widest part of your foot, and for good reason. This design helps distribute our body weight more evenly across our feet. It allows for better support and drive. Having wider toes can enable better grip and balance, especially when engaging in activities like walking on uneven surfaces or climbing. So, when we SQUISH our toes into a shoe, we are losing the ability to do all of those things.

We should be picking shoes that do not change the structural anatomy of our foot!

What do healthy shoes look like?
Say it with us, FUNCTION over FASHION!! We know that can be really hard especially with summer coming up, there are so many cute sandals that you could be wearing, but let’s think about the long term here.

Here are a few non-negotiable when it comes to buying a new pair of shoes!
1. Anatomically wide toe box, this means when you put the shoe on, you can still see space in-between your toes.
2. Completely flat zero-drop, your heel and toes should sit on the exact same flat plane.
3. Highly flexible, thin sole, your shoe should be able to fold up with ease.

All in all, we have traded fashion for functionality and it shows! Having healthy feet is more important than you may think, it’s time to start showing your feet some love!

What causes sound sensitivity? Hauser's Law explains the pathophysiology of hearing distortions. Hauser's law #2 can be used to determine if there is a structural cause of unexplained symptoms, such as hearing distortions. In this video, Dr. Hauser explains how sound sensitivity can develop due to a breakdown of structures in the neck.
