5 Ways to Prevent the Summer Slide Without Sacrificing Summer Fun

1. Set a reading routine — but let your child choose the books. Even 20 minutes of daily reading maintains literacy skills and builds vocabulary. When kids choose their own books, they're far more likely to stick with it.

2. Bring math into everyday life. Cooking, budgeting, measuring, and even card games naturally reinforce number sense and arithmetic. You don't need worksheets — you need opportunities.

3. Revisit the skills that gave your child trouble this year. Rather than moving forward, use the summer to close existing gaps. A student who struggled with multiplication in third grade will struggle with fractions in fourth. Summer is the perfect time to catch up.

4. Keep a consistent schedule. Completely unstructured summers make it harder for students to re-engage in September. Even a loose daily routine — wake time, activity time, reading time — keeps the brain primed for learning.
