Gremlins or Boston Terriers? 😄

If Gollum crossed with a lap dog is your vibe, then these babies are for you. 💙

Meet our senior bonded pair: Onyx Storm and Ruby! These 7-year-old Boston Terriers sadly came into our care due to their owner's health. Since they have always been side by side, they are looking for a new home together.

Onyx and Ruby are super sweet and cuddly and love to crawl into your lap. Plus, they are sure to make you smile with their enormous eyes and goblin-like good looks!

Both of these gals came to us with dental disease. Ruby had a dental procedure today with our veterinary team and Onyx will be foster-to-adopt until she gets hers done, too. Potential adopters should be prepared for the extra veterinary expenses that can come with loving senior dogs.

Do you have love in your heart for not one, but two senior sweethearts? 💕 Please SHARE to help them find their forever family or come meet them at our shelter tomorrow!

So many of you have rallied for our Aussie rescues - crying out against puppy mills, advocating for harsher punishments, and demanding better for pets in Indiana. As horrific as the Aussie case is, as animal welfare professionals, this one might even be more devastating.

You may recall back in January when we responded to an urgent call from the Dekalb County Sheriff Department’s Animal Control Officer seeking assistance for 20+ dogs living in horrendous conditions and in need of immediate placement. And it broke our hearts. Because this time it wasn’t a puppy mill - it was a rescue.

Reputable shelters/rescues should hold themselves to an incredibly high standard when it comes to animal care. Every decision should be guided by regulations, best practices, and a sense of responsibility for the pets and communities they serve. Transparency and accountability aren’t optional—they’re part of the promise we make to show up, do better, and always put animals first.

When a shelter/rescue takes in more animals than it can reasonably support, even with the best intentions, the strain can add up quickly and compromise the quality of care the pets receive.

In this case, care wasn’t just compromised. It was veritably non-existent. What the Animal Control Officer found were kennels covered in f***s and urine, off-the-charts ammonia levels, limited access to water and diets consisting of expired food. Many of the pets weren’t even current on vaccines, let alone being treated for known medical issues like heartworm disease. A few had been deemed “untouchable” and had spent YEARS confined to a cage.

At Humane Fort Wayne, we seek justice for ALL animals. And that means not only demanding accountability for puppy mill operators, but also for “colleagues” in animal welfare when their practices become inhumane.

The leader of this “rescue” organization was charged with 12 misdemeanors in relation to this situation and will be in court this Wednesday, June 10, 2026. And we will be there, too.

Rescue work isn’t about saying yes to everything—it’s about knowing your limits, protecting animal welfare, and ensuring that every pet brought in has a real chance to thrive, not just survive.
