Moving from being a renter to a homeowner is such an exciting step! 🎉

Don't forget that you'll need to change your insurance too! So what does that look like?

Basically, you will cancel the renter's policy and then buy a homeowner's policy. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind to help the transition!

🏠 Look for discounts! Some companies offer discounts if you've had renter's insurance with them for a specified amount of time. There are also different types of discounts available, so be sure to ask!

🏠 Keep in mind that either policy (renter's or homeowner's) will cover the property while in transit or in storage, but NOT due to damage done while being handled (packed, carried, or moved) by movers or friends. Most personal property is covered anywhere in the world. The question is not usually what is covered, but rather what caused the damage is covered. For example, not all policies cover theft. Most cover collision. Be sure to carefully review (and ask questions!) before you move so you know what's covered.

🏠 You should keep at least one policy in place during the move, if at all possible. The only reason this might not be possible is if you are forced to put your belongings into storage while you wait for your home to be available to move in. As long as you have someplace you are staying, you can get a renter's policy.
