Why can firefighters use water on burning power poles without getting electrocuted?

They use a water mist system, which sprays fine droplets that don’t easily conduct electricity. It’s also applied in short bursts to avoid forming a continuous path for current.

Even with sparks visible, this mist is safer than a solid water stream. However, it's not used on ultra-high voltage lines, which can arc through air.

In fact, water mist is a common tool in firefighting. For example, when dealing with gas pipeline fires, firefighters use a water curtain—a shield of high-pressure water mist—to block flames and isolate heat.
