In observation of the American Bicentennial in 1976, the National Archives produced a collection of commemorative items to be sold in their gift shop. Genealogist Rick Springer loaned the Fort Worth History Center some items he purchased in 1976 while visiting the National Archives. There are reprinted copies of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The display also includes a commemorative program and medallion from when the 1976 Freedom Train visited Fort Worth in February of that year.

Stop by the Fort Worth History Center during the month of July if you’d like a closer look.

In 1976, Fort Worth celebrated the nation’s 200th birthday by painting fire hydrants as patriotic characters. In spring that year, the Fort Worth Water Department put out a call for “artistic volunteers” to paint the fire “plugs” using one of six furnished designs, or another design with Water Department approval.

This photograph and many others were recently transferred to the Municipal Archives by the Water Department. If you or someone you know was involved in painting, we would love to hear from you in the comments!
