Happy Father’s Day to all of you that are Fathers.

I would like to share a few thoughts about Joe Biden’s recent diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer. This is NOT related to politics but about the concept of screening for cancer. I am commenting as an oncology nurse with a focus on prostate cancer over the past 25 years. I am also a breast cancer survivor.

About 15 years ago the dynamics of screening for prostate cancer shifted from aggressively encouraging men to have an annual PSA blood test to suggesting men talk to their Drs about the pros and cons of screening. The rationale being giving for this change was prostate cancer is slow growing and screenings was causing harm related to undue stress for a cancer that’s not always life threatening. I was one of many that voiced concerns this would give men an excuse to ignore the issue of prostate cancer. Many medical experts predicted we would start seeing more cases of men being diagnosed at a higher stage.

Now we see the outcome of allowing men to ignore a cancer they don’t want to think about. There is some need to screen with caution in older men with multiple health issues. But when medical experts decide to ignore a common cancer screening simply because of the patient’s age, that is not providing comprehensive care. Fear of finding cancer is real. But as a survivor of an aggressive type of breast cancer I can speak with confidence that dealing with a small cancer is much better then trying to get control of aggressive metastatic cancer. Take advantage of the screening tools available to us in 2025. There are numerous resources to help anyone with a newly diagnosed cancer cope and learn about treatment options.

I am hearing that President Biden was possibly not routinely screened for prostate cancer after he turned 75 years old. (7years ago) That is the current clinical guidelines. What are your thoughts about stopping screening at a certain age? Do you think fear of finding out he had cancer as President was a motivation?
