As day turns into night and the last light peaks over the horizon I had only a moment to position myself for this shot of the Bloody Lane watchtower at Antietam.

Seeing creatively isn’t always easy to do. This spot was bitterly cold, the wind was blowing and gloves were necessary to avoid frostbite. The first shot or 2 I didn’t like, so I had to adjust and try to see creatively. This looks like a large but in reality it’s just an ice and snow drift at the edge of Lake Ontario. The ice blows in off the water and piles up on the shore, then when it snows the drifts resemble sand dunes. We didn’t use any color filters to capture this but I love how the snow picked up hues of purple. A 10 stop ND filter slowed the scene down and with about a 5 min exposure the clouds blurred quite nicely. My camera angle was very low to the ground making the drift look larger than it really was. On your next photo adventure think about what you are seeing and after your first capture what you can do to improve it.
