A Feral Roots Apothecary Studio Fall Offering

This season as I posted earlier, I’ve been working closely with the green sweetgum burs, the soft, unripe fruit that still carries its seeds, its tannic green brightness, and the first traces of resin deep inside. Each bur is hand‑cut into eight pieces and allowed to dry just enough to release its internal moisture. Once the plant has settled, I give the pieces a light pour‑over of high‑proof alcohol to dissolve the resinous compounds and wake up the aromatics hidden in the seeds. After the alcohol evaporates completely, the burs are ready for a slow, warm infusion in olive oil.

The result is a light green‑gold oil, the softest hue of all my herbal oils, carrying the subtle balsamic sweetness of sweetgum resin and the grounding presence of the tree itself. This is not a medicinal extract as the antiviral compounds remain in the water and alcohol preparations. A topical oleoresin oil meant for massage, anointing, and skin support is made instead. It’s gentle, resin kissed, and regionally rooted, crafted for those who appreciate quiet tree medicine and the way sweetgum stands firm through storm seasons.
