Air Quality Alert for Mid-Michigan Pet Owners

There have been a lot posts regarding air quality for people but we want to acknowledge our pets needs. While we may notice the haze and smell, our pets can be affected even more.

To help keep your pets safe:
• Keep walks short or postpone them if the air is smoky.
• Keep pets indoors as much as possible with windows closed.
• Provide plenty of fresh water.
• Avoid strenuous play or exercise outdoors.
• Watch for signs of smoke irritation, including coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, excessive panting, eye irritation, or unusual tiredness.

Pets with heart or lung disease, senior pets, puppies, and kittens are especially vulnerable.

If your pet is having trouble breathing or showing concerning symptoms, contact your veterinarian promptly.

Another heat wave is upon us!

As temperatures climb, remember that the heat can be dangerous for our furry family members. Keep your pets safe by following these simple tips:

1. Make sure fresh, cool water is always available.
2. Provide plenty of shade if your pet spends time outdoors.
3. Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
4. Avoid hot pavement, it can burn sensitive paw pads. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
5. Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, bright red gums, or collapse. If you notice these signs, seek veterinary care immediately.

Keep outdoor playtime short and encourage frequent breaks in a cool, shaded area.
