As an expert in the field of driver training, I'm extremely disappointed with the attempts to curb teenage driving accidents by tugging on heartstrings via tragic videos. Since the 1940’s, the attempt to reduce traffic accidents by only addressing the behavioral attitudes toward driving has failed. Tragic videos without increasing driving skills tends to breed fear and fear can destroy confidence. What’s missing is the skill of driving. The driver education industry in the U.S is severely lacking in skills training which is why we have twice as many accidents per capita as Germany. Germany requires a minimum of 20 hours of skills training and an approval by the instructor before the 80 minute driving exam is taken.
