You might be surprised to find out that several of my easy runs in the peak weeks of marathon training when I ran 2:54 last year were actually 10:30/mi pace. This was the training cycle where I ran the slowest I ever had in training on EZ runs but had the fastest performances in workouts & races!
•
I go 2-4.5 min per mile slower than marathon pace on easy days. Why? Because that is just what I need to do to recover in between quality workouts while running at relatively high mileage.
•
Have I always gone this slow on my easy days?
Absolutely not. I used to run much faster on my easy days, and I would always show up at the race burn out and unable to hit my potential. 6.5 years ago, I thought I peaked at the sport of marathoning because I was seemingly stuck at the 3:29-3:25 mark! I ran 8 marathons in that time range. I was no longer improving and in fact, I was getting slower. I was doing exactly what VDOT would tell me that my easy pace range is but it wasn’t slow enough.
•
When I finally slowed down enough & listened to my body requesting 3 days inbetween hard workouts, I started to see improvements. It seems HIGHLY counterproductive to go slower on easy runs or to space out workouts by 3-4 days. But if you are at a roadblock and you want to breakthrough, something has to change! Nothing changes if nothing changes ;)

Every day I lace up for a run during a training cycle I run with a purpose. That purpose on easy days is: Going as slow as I need to in order to feel 🔥 FIRE for my workout days. My training cycle included 1-2 quality workouts per week which included paces at marathon pace or faster. Those “fast” miles accounted for 10-20% of my total weekly mileage. I will do a subsequent post on workouts so you can see the variation in training.
