There is no perfect number of times a week a person should bathe- whether they have dementia or not. It's generally recommended that a person showers two or three times a week to maintain good hygiene and skin health. However, there are many factors that play into this.
Consider the following factors:
- Level of physical activity: the sweatier they are, the more they may need to shower.
- Skin health: certain skin conditions may require less or more bathing
- Cultural factors: cultural and personal beliefs and practices can influence frequency
- Incontinence: regular cleansing is essential to prevent infections when a person is incontinent
- Past habits: because long term memories are often more readily accessible, they may follow the routines they had long ago
- Caregiver assistance: the availability of a caregiver to assist may impact frequency
- Motivation and compliance: a person's eagerness or resistance to bathe will impact how often they participate.
When you are unable to facilitate the frequency of bathing that you would prefer, it's important to consider prioritizing areas and maximizing opportunities. For instance, if a full shower isn't possible, try to get them to "sponge bath" and wipe off areas such as their face, peri areas, underarms, etc.
How often do you or the person you are caring for shower?
