After the 1900 hurricane killed 8,000 people Galveston built the most ambitious coastal engineering project in American history to that date, a seventeen-foot-high concrete seawall stretching ten miles along the Gulf shoreline, combined with a grade raising that elevated the entire island up to seventeen feet above its original elevation by pumping sand from the Gulf floor. The project took years and cost millions. When the 1915 hurricane hit Galveston with winds comparable to the 1900 storm the death toll was eight people. The seawall worked. Galveston built it with immigrant labor, Black labor, and Mexican labor whose names appear in almost no account of the project. ⚡🌊

The Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano is scheduled to arrive in Galveston on Thursday as part of its 98th Midshipmen Training Cruise and is expected to dock at Pier 21 through Monday.
