Kansas Rep. Shallenburger has introduced a resolution to create Charlie Kirk Free Speech Day. This is the wrong direction for Kansas.

Charlie Kirk built his platform on a version of free speech that meant he could say whatever he wanted without accountability, while actively working to shut down opposing viewpoints. That is not real free speech, it’s a thin veil in an attempt to normalize the extreme views of White Christian Nationalism. It is not someone Kansas should elevate with a state-recognized day.

If this resolution passes, it tells Kansans that only certain voices matter. And if your voice was among those whom Kirk demeaned, it says you are not welcome in Kansas. It sidelines the real issues families are facing: affordable housing, jobs, childcare, rising costs and public education.

Kansas deserves leaders who protect free speech for everyone and who stay focused on improving the lives of the people we serve. I oppose this resolution because it does nothing to strengthen our democracy or help Kansans build better lives.
