Recent Anti-LGBTQ+ Bills in North Carolina

These legislative actions significantly restrict the rights and services for LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly transgender youth, in North Carolina. Staying informed about these developments is crucial for understanding their impact on the community.

Proposed Bills

1. Limiting Gender-Confirming Care:
• HB 808: Bans initiating gender-affirming care for transgender youth under 18 but allows those already receiving care as of August 1 to continue. Status: Passed and veto overridden.
• SB 631: Similar to HB 808, this bill restricts gender-affirming care for minors. Status: Pending.
2. School Instruction and Policies:
• SB 49 (Don’t Say Gay): Bans discussions of LGBTQ+ topics in K-4th grade classrooms and requires teachers to notify parents if a student comes out as transgender or gender non-conforming. It also mandates parental review of lesson plans. Status: Passed and veto overridden.
• HB 574: Requires students to participate in school sports teams corresponding to their s*x assigned at birth, effectively barring transgender students from sports aligned with their gender identity. Status: Passed and veto overridden.
