The word “Emergency” scares most people, but all it means is that you will be running your electric backup heat or gas backup heat. This will prevent your heat pumps from running and potentially save on costly repair bills. Yes, ice will damage heat pumps. Once the condenser coil is covered with ice, the unit can no longer transfer heat, and more importantly, ice buildup on fan blades will destroy motors, blades, and condenser coils.
