A note from Pastor Glenn. ✍️
Remember

During our years in Canada, we learned to celebrate the Canadian version of Memorial Day (called “Remembrance Day”) on November 11 (Veterans’ Day in the US). Canadians remember those who gave their lives in defense of their country by wearing a plastic poppy on their clothing during the month of November, reading a poem about flowers on a battlefield, and gathering at the “Legion” (think “VFW”) to tell stories, read names, and observe moments of silence. For several years, as a member of a chorus called “Acapella Road,” I participated by attending the celebration of the largest “Legion Hall” in Calgary to sing “Oh Canada,” “God Save the King,” and another song or two about boys going off to war, with my Barbershop brothers.

It's good for us to set aside a day and observe annual rituals to remind us to remember that no blessing comes without a price. Countless people have willingly made the ultimate sacrifice so that generations, including ours, could enjoy the freedoms we all too often take for granted.

Remembering is also an important practice of our faith. Jesus gave us the Lord’s Supper, a memorial of his broken body and shed blood that has purchased our salvation. As we pause to remember, we not only give thanks, but we also give opportunity for the Spirit of God to deepen our understanding and our experience of the new creation Jesus died to bring within us.

I hope you will take some special time this weekend to remember, to give thanks, and to recommit yourself to living in the fullness of all that is possible in your life because of the sacrifice of others.

We’ll certainly have the opportunity to do just that as we gather on Sunday morning. I look forward to seeing you there!
