Establishing literacy in a village can be a daunting task, but a necessary (and fruitful!) one as missionaries work to translate and share the Gospel. Last year, six men hiked back and forth between Kongo and Mawerero weekly for three months to attend literacy class with the Cann family. That’s a six-hour hike.
After their graduation, the Canns agreed to pay for and print all the materials necessary if the village could build a classroom, provide teachers, and secure support from the community. This spring, the Cann family had the joy of taking part in the opening ceremony for a literacy school in Kongo.
At the event, Cassidy Cann was able to share the reason for helping with this school: that the Kongo people might read the Bible in their own heart language. She was able to bring them a copy of Ephesians and share it with the teachers.
Pray for the Kongo people and this literacy class, that God might use it for His glory. Read Cassidy’s recount of the story on their family blog here: https://cannsofclay.com/literacy-goes-to-kongo

Did you know that roughly half of missionaries leave the field within the first five years? Why?
Usually this is because there is some sort of deficiency…Whether that be in a missionary’s character, competencies (training), or convictions. At FinisTerre, we believe in partnering with the local church to ensure their missionaries are properly trained, equipped, and cared for so that when they get to the field, they’re ready to finish the job, not just start the job.
With over 800 languages spoken on the island, at least 300 of those don't have a translation of Scripture. May the Lord break our hearts for those who have yet to hear.

Life on the Field: Transportation
Part of learning a new culture is learning to travel the way they travel. In Madang, almost everyone takes a PMV, or Public Motor Vehicle. This can cost as low as 1 Kina (or about 25 cents in the US). Many times they can be warm and crowded, as seen in the photo!

You wouldn’t hire a pastor who wasn’t trained theologically, exegetically, and hermeneutically, would you? So why do we often think sending someone who “loves Jesus” and has a sense of adventure is enough?

A huge part of ministry in Papua New Guinea involves...helicopters! Approximately $20k of each missionary family's yearly budget goes towards helicopter fees...Most of that going towards supply runs. Supplies are shopped for in Madang (medical supplies, food, other needs) and flown in every six weeks.
Our dream and prayer is that one day we would be able to provide a scholarship to train up our own helicopter pilots and mechanics to more affordably sustain our missionaries on the field.

Meet the Miller Family! Josh and Autumn are sent out of Community Baptist Church in Stuart, Florida. Previously, they spent 2.5 years in Papua New Guinea, and were overjoyed to be able to return in January, joining the team in Mawerero among the nDo people.
Please join us in lifting this family up in prayer as they serve:
- Pray for continued spiritual growth, emotional health, and mental endurance during all of the transitions of moving to Papua New Guinea and then into a tribe
- Pray for consistent financial support, and that those who give would do so with joy and would be blessed
- Pray for the unity of their team
- Pray for the growth of the believers in the nDO tribe--that God would establish a maturing church there

"Bangena is one of the first women in the village of Mawerero to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. To anyone on the outside, Bangena already knew God. But she had never heard the Gospel…Not clearly.
Missionaries Zach and Cassidy have been living among these people for over a decade now, working to learn their language and translate the Gospel of Mark. It was through these efforts that Bangena learned that not only could Jesus heal sickness, but He could also forgive her sins.
As she was discipled through translated Scriptures and parenting lessons, her heart broke… And she responded with action. She began sharing everything she was learning with her husband, her grown children, and their families.
This is what your giving makes possible. Lives forever changed by the power of God’s Word.

Though roughly the size of California and with a population of only 12 million people, Papua New Guinea holds over 10% of all the world’s languages, making it the most diverse country on the planet! Of the 830 languages in the country, more than 300 are not yet written down, making access to Scripture for these people groups nonexistent.
