Excitement is in the air. Starting the new platform tonight - I hope you can join me!
These are the most simple, basic instructions that I can give to enter first Jhana.
1) quiet your mind with the intentional and sustained attention to the Meditation object. (The breath).
3) Allow your attention to shift to a pleasant sensation. By doing so, you set up a positive reinforcement feedback loop within the quiet mind. A pleasant sensation maybe a warming in the area of the heart. Or you might try focusing on a smile. The active smiling generates endorphins, which makes you feel good, which makes you smile more, which generates more endorphins, etc...the same is true with any positive sensation.
3) The final and most difficult part of entering the first Jhana is to do nothing but observe the pleasure. Any attempt to increase the pleasure or any thoughts of wanting more pleasure, any thoughts at all will interrupt the feedback loop and drop you to a less quiet state of mind. By doing nothing but focusing intently on the pleasure, you are propelled into an unmistakably altered state of consciousness called Jhana.
