What is a palatal expander, or RPE? An expander or rapid palatal expander is a custom orthodontic device that is placed in the roof of the mouth to gradually widen the upper jaw. By expanding the upper jaw it can correct issues like crowding, misaligned teeth, crossbites, improve breathing and help prevent any future jaw surgery later in life. It’s often used & most effective in children or young adolescents whose jawbones are still growing, but is not entirely impossible for an adult to need one! Basically an expander helps the teeth have more personal space 🤓

Using a special key to turn the screw, it applies a gentle and gradual pressure to widen the jaw. The expansion process is typically pain free and allows new bone growth in the palate. Once at peak expansion, braces can be easily applied to the top level of teeth moving forward with the orthodontic treatment 🦷
