🚨 EHV-1 (Neurologic Form) Update – Pinal County 🚨

East Valley Equine Practitioners would like to share an important update from the Arizona State Veterinarian regarding a confirmed outbreak of neuropathogenic Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1/EHM) in Pinal County.

🔹 Two horses exhibiting neurologic signs tested positive for EHV-1
🔹 One affected horse was humanely euthanized due to progressive neurologic disease
🔹 Exposure may have occurred at the following events:

• Jan 18 – Horseshoe Park Extreme Barrel Race
• Jan 20 – ICE Wittmann Breakaway Roping
• Jan 21 – Roper Nation Breakaway Roping
• Jan 21 – John Volken Academy Ranch
• Jan 23 – TACC Thunderbird Farms Arena
• Jan 24 – Horseshoe Park Extreme Barrel Race
• Jan 27 – TACC Thunderbird Farms Arena

⚠️ Important reminders for horse owners that may have been exposed:
• Monitor re**al temperatures twice daily and log results
• Watch closely for fever, nasal discharge, cough, weakness, incoordination, or urinary changes
• Contact your veterinarian immediately if any concerning signs develop
• Horses that attended the above events should voluntarily self-quarantine for 14 days and avoid travel to new shows during this period

Many horses can shed EHV-1 without obvious signs, so vigilance and early detection are critical in limiting spread.
