5 Second Rule... is it worth it!
Here’s the “cliff notes” version of 2 studies:
- Any time you drop any food to any surface, bacteria attaches to the food. But it’s the level of bacteria that is the issue.
- Dry food picks up very little bacteria
- Food with moisture picked up ALOT of bacteria
- Dropping food on tile and laminate picks up the most bacteria
- Dropping food on carpet picked up the least
- One study said they won’t eat anything dropped on the floor because of the possible bacteria on the floor.
- Another said they would use the 5 second rule for things dropped inside their house.
- Nobody would pick up and eat ANYTHING that touched a sidewalk.

Conclusion:
Eating food that’s dropped will have bacteria attached and can potentially make you sick but fewer bacteria adheres to the food if you pick it up fast.

My Personal Conclusion: If the food is delicious, it’s worth the risk!
