A tooth that has “died” too early doesn’t always mean it’s lost forever.

This is a great example of how we can sometimes help a young tooth continue developing even after it has become infected.

A 9-year-old patient came to us with an infection in a lower tooth that had not yet finished forming its root. Because the root was still developing, our goal was not just to clean the infection—but to encourage the body to continue natural healing and development.

We carefully disinfected the inside of the tooth and placed a medication to allow the area to calm and heal over the next couple of weeks. At the next visit, the medication was removed and a gentle bleeding response was created inside the tooth to form a natural scaffold for healing cells.

We then sealed the tooth with a strong bioceramic material and placed a permanent restoration.

At the 1-year follow-up, we were happy to see continued root development and healing exactly as expected.

Last week, Dr. Hirschman attended the American Association of Endodontists annual meeting in Salt Lake City, where leading specialists from across the country gathered to explore the latest advancements in endodontic care, technology, and clinical innovation.

In addition to expanding his expertise, Dr. Hirschman had the special opportunity to reconnect with longtime colleagues and friends—which always makes these CE events even more meaningful.
