A Bountiful Spring Basket

Greens for the year and many beyond. Prolific, self-seeding happy plants jump when mature. These perennial sweeties thrive anywhere and would love to find a new home. And they will.

Happy April Fools day from A. Bird Farm!

(If you find any of these bittercress, please don’t bring them to us. We have enough.)

Old greeting cards from a century ago used to feature birds for Valentine’s Day. Robins, cardinals, doves. Birds most familiar to most people. Not birds with… wait for it.

Decades ago, we used to visit a little old thrift store in downtown Portland. We got this rug and loved it, not knowing exactly what the creatures woven into it were. A primitive rendition of chickens or turkeys, we guessed. The horns on the heads? Surely they must be combs.

Later we discovered that had the rug been in color, the actual horn on each would be a bright blue. On a real living creature. We named her "Dinah Shore" to reflect her apparent prehistoric heritage. Dinah is a strange but dear bird whose ancestors come from Guinea, a country on the coast of West Africa.

She wears a wonderful red wattle like a bow around her neck that wobbles when she runs. May all your upcoming Valentine's Day surprises also have red bows!

Galanthus ‘Hallelujah‘ - Snowdrop. This was one of the blessings that we received when we bought Old Goat Farm and its delightful gardens this past summer. It's one we’re excited to see starting to prepare for another season. The first of the snowdrops to bloom, it's much taller than most of the others. The foliage remains attractive in the garden for months even after blooming is done and is also a bit unusual in having a nice blue cast. We'll do our best to have some plants and bulbs ready for sale in our nursery when we open this May.

Chilly weather on the farm means planning for the coming seasons and keeping everyone warm . A greenhouse lets many sleeping plants live through the cold and also lets cold-weather crops rest for the active time ahead.

We are stoking the fires and planning for lots of seed growing. So far, we’ve got some good lettuce and cilantro seed growth.

We’ve also got plenty of sleeping perennials, including evergreen false Solomon seal, pulmonaria, sedums, and hellebores, along with galanthus ready to wake up to become fair maids of February. Cyclamens will be ready to bloom in just a few weeks!
