There is a spirit in the air that encourages men to quit before they ever start. A creeping fatalism growing in the cracks of today’s culture.

It’s not big, bold, loud. It’s a quiet, slow growth. A pervasive hum. Fatalism looks sophisticated, educated, intellectual. It wears the clothes of realism and calls itself wisdom.

Fatalism says the culture is too messed up, the family too broken, the church too weak, the next generation too lost, being married too difficult. It says men are too disparaged, too distracted, working too hard, getting nowhere.

That is not realism. That is fatalism.

Fatalism begins in small moments, small drips that begin as disappointment, but can become a flood of negativity. The feeling that nothing really changes and that, as philosopher Karl Popper described it, “Things always have been and always will be so.”

This is not you.

A fatalistic man studies the ruins and calls it “destiny.” A complacent man studies the ruins and calls it “analysis.” A man of God studies the ruins and starts rebuilding the wall.

Nehemiah did not deny the destruction of Jerusalem. He wept over it. He prayed over it. Then he rose up and did something about it. The rubble was real. The enemies were real. The mockery was real. But his faith was bold and his steps ordered of the Lord.

The world does not need more men who diagnose the darkness. We have plenty of commentators. We have enough critics. We are drowning in cynical opinion.

The world needs men who will pray when others panic.

Men who will build when others turn away.
Men who will disciple when others passively discard.
Men who will speak life when the culture speaks death.

Men who will boldly state, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).

Bold faith is where men must stand today.

Men with fire in their bones and stalwart courage in their hearts. Men with the touch of God on their hands and the Word of God in their mouths. Men who refuse to let cynicism become their creed.

That’s you.

Believe it. Pray it over your own heart.

Don’t give in. Instead, START. Move forward.

God and His Word are your fortress, your strong tower, your friend, your guide, your teacher, the One who gives you power, fire, purpose, strength, persistence, boldness
